I have to say that I never thought I would live to see a day when this wonderful place called the United States of America would be in so much turmoil. This nation was founded and developed on Christian principles for a reason. Whether you are a Christian or not, you have to admit that we need laws and guidelines for direction. We may not like and agree with them all, but they are laid out for us for the protection and betterment of all.
Judges 21:25b (The Message) says: “People did whatever they felt like doing.” Or, as other translations put it “…all the people did whatever seemed right in their own eyes.”
“We forget that God never asked us to do what seems right in our own eyes: He asks us to do what is right in His eyes.” (Chris Tiegreen)
As a general rule, people that are left to their own devices do not do what is right in God’s eyes – they tend to become carnal and depraved and if it makes them happy then who cares what anyone else thinks? Who cares about the guidance given to them by God? “…we…are guided by impure minds. At the time, that seems like a satisfying independence. But in truth, it’s a scary way to live.” (Chris Tiegreen) [Emphasis mine]
If you have done any reading in the Old Testament, you know how God had to do a lot of pretty drastic things in order to get the attention of the people. They were a bunch of stiff-necked, hard-headed people. Just consider when Moses went to Egypt to face off with Pharaoh as instructed by God, to free the Jewish people that were enslaved there. Pharaoh refused to let them go and consequently suffered – destruction of crops by insects; destruction of crops as well as human life by huge hailstones; all water turned to blood; among other things, until the ultimate act of the death of their firstborn children. That finally got Pharaoh’s attention – at least long enough that he freed the Jews.
Then after the Jews were freed from Egypt and their life of slavery, instead of having grateful and obedient hearts, they complained and rebelled. Consequently a short, more direct trip to their promised land resulted in a 40 year wandering in the desert. During those 40 years they repeatedly would fall back into doing “whatever seemed right in their own eyes”, and there was always an unpleasant price to pay.
When God gave Moses the laws that He wanted the people to follow, it was a massive number of restrictive laws. Their failure to be able to follow them made it very obvious how weak they were on their own. It would require perfection and there was no one among them that could live up to that.
We should feel very relieved that Jesus – that one perfect man – came into this world. He lived and died in order to save us all and we no longer have to live under those oppressive requirements. However, there are still Biblical principles laid out for us that we should strive to meet; and, there are still laws of man that are in place to protect and guide us as well.
In this nation, over the years there has been a falling away from the Christian faith by so many. It has resulted in people rejecting or having no knowledge at all, of the principles laid out in the Bible. This results in that same scenario of too many living in such a way that they do “whatever seems right in their own eyes.” That has led to little, or no respect for authority, lack of respect and care for others (especially if they disagree with you), as well as evil and depravity everywhere we turn.
As we turn on our TV’s, pick up our newspapers and turn on our computers we are bombarded with negative news. A plague has been released on the world that has sickened millions and killed tens of thousands, resulting in nations having to do hard shut-downs paralyzing economies. That created people without jobs and income not knowing how they are going to survive. Some businesses had to close permanently because they could not make it until they were allowed to open their doors again. We see people dressed in black, wearing masks attacking our police, breaking windows, looting stores, burning everything they can get their hands on – claiming they are fighting against Facism – when all the while their actions and demands are those of Fascists. We see a group of people espousing how a particular group of people matter (which they do), but do they matter more than any other group? The definitive answer to that is a resounding NO! They are doing nothing more than using their clever play on words to mask their efforts to turn our nation into a socialist nation – their leaders self-proclaimed trained Marxists. (If you do not believe that, then just google a question asking about it.) We see our elected leaders from the lowest levels to the highest levels overstepping their bounds acting like mini-Hitlers removing our God-given and legislatively-given rights. We have a media that hides the truth, distorts the truth, even blatantly lies to us – all while censoring us when we disagree. What is happening?
Do you think there is a possibility that this nation has turned into a group of whiny, rebellious, ungrateful, disobedient people? Stiff-necked? Hard-headed? Have we forgotten that we have a God that wants the best for us…that when we live according to His principles we can have a better life? Have we forgotten to talk with Him on a regular basis, thanking Him for all the good things in our lives? Asking for guidance and help for the things that confuse and confound us? Have we thought about how we speak and act on a daily basis? Is it in a pleasant and accepting way? Or, are we rude, condescending, unaccepting of others and their opinions and beliefs? Have we, knowing that the way we think, talk, act is not the best way to be doing those things, yet we are unwilling to make any kind of changes?
Do you think there is even a remote possibility that God could be trying to get our attention? I have heard from more than one source that despite the fact that people have been unable to attend in-person church services most of this year, that unchurched people have been reaching out to the churches in record numbers. That is wonderful news – but it is not enough. Things happen and at some point may overwhelm you – and it may very well be because God allows it in order to get your attention and force you to make a choice. Will you make the choice to rely on Him and trust Him?
All people that consider themselves to be believers in God should be getting on their knees and praying for guidance and mercy – for themselves and for our nation. We need to be seeking help from God if we sincerely want to see things turn around in our nation. It is time to stop pretending that everything is just going to be okay. It is time to get serious – serious with God.
Every day during my quiet time I pray – I pray for each and every one of my family members; for all of my friends; I pray over an ever-changing list of people that need a touch of healing; for the pastors/teachers/leaders of my church; for our nation’s leaders – even the ones that I do not agree with – asking for their protection and that they make decisions with Godly wisdom. Then, I thank God for all of my many blessings and give thanks that He forgives me of my sins and I ask that He help me be aware of my thoughts, words and deeds so that I do not just continue to repeat the same sins over and over.
I am so very far from a good example of what a Christian should be – I have so very many failures. But, I sincerely want to be humble, to pray and seek God’s face and do my very best to turn from any wicked ways. I know that He hears my prayers and that He forgives me. But, I am only one person – what we need right now is a nation of God-fearing people to take these steps in order to see God restore our land. If millions of people would sincerely seek Him, I believe we can and would see things happening – good things.
We do not have to continue living in a frightened, scary way. However, there are steps that we need to take: God says in 2 Chronicles 7:14 (New Living Translation) “Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.” [Emphasis mine]
I read an article today by a lady named Shelley McLaughlin. I want to share some things she said that I think relate to what I have talked about:
“Leviticus 19 says Yahweh’s children are forbidden to seek out, meet with, or listen to mediums. Today we have the news media and social media permeating our air waves, our eyes, and our brains. The Prince of the Power of the Air (waves) has taken control of words, providing confusing messages of twisted, perverted truth for our consumption. Those words take root, turn into philosophies and doctrines, then sift us like wheat.
Few people recognize the dangers of fake news because we consume so much more of it than the Good News. When you feed on death, you die. When you speak death, you eat the fruit of it.
Isaiah 8:19-20 tells us what to do: ‘When men tell you to consult the spirits of the dead and spiritists who whisper and mutter, shouldn’t a people consult their God instead? Why consult the dead on behalf of the living? Turn to God’s instructions (Torah/law) and the testimony (of Yeshua/of salvation). If they do not speak according to this Word, they have no light of dawn.’”
