The Truth

I keep my car radio tuned to a Christian station and one day this week they asked listeners to call in and share how something they’d heard on the radio had affected their life.  A lady called in saying she is 60 years old and that a song titled “The Truth” had made a huge difference in her life.  I’m not going to get this totally right, I’m sure – but, she said that her father had been extremely focused on accomplishments and physical appearance for their family.  So she’d pretty much felt insecure her whole life not believing she could ever measure up.  Then she related how these words in that song had brought her peace and self acceptance:

“The truth is I am my Father’s child; I make Him proud and I make Him smile; I was made in the image of a perfect King; He looks at me and wouldn’t change a thing.”

It had touched her so deeply that as she related the story she began to weep.  I just really appreciated her testimony and could relate to a certain extent.

I had always liked that song every time I had heard it, so after hearing her story I decided to find the lyrics of the song.  I want to share more of them with you, because I believe there are more “lessons” to be learned from them:

“How many times can you hear the same lie; before you start to believe it? The enemy keeps whisperin’ to me; I swear these days, it’s all that I’m hearin’.  I used to know who I was; Now I look in the mirror and I’m not so sure. Lord, I don’t wanna listen to the lies anymore.”

How many of us deal with these kinds of attacks from the enemy?  Things that we start to believe because it’s been said to us so often in our life; or, we start to believe things about ourselves because of the way we have been treated, etc. Words that are whispered in our ear – “You are not smart enough”  “You are not pretty/handsome enough.”  “You are too young/old.”  “You are too fat/skinny.”  “You are not strong enough physically/emotionally to handle that.”  “You cannot do that because that’s a job for a man/woman.”  “You cannot do that because you’re married/single/divorced.”  When you hear things often enough, you start to believe them, regardless of how valid they are.

The words in the song that follow the ones I quoted in the first paragraph are:

“The truth is I am truly loved; By a God who’s good when I’m not good enough; I don’t belong to the lies, I belong to You; And that’s the truth.”

What truth is spoken there!  We don’t have to listen to those lies – we need to listen to what our God says about us and none of those “shortcomings” matter to Him.  All that matters is His love for us.

“Think how much the Father loves us. He loves us so much that he lets us be called his children, as we truly are. But since the people of this world did not know who Christ is, they don’t know who we are.”  (1 John 3:1 CEV)

“Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.  And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. No power in the sky above or in the earth below—indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”  (Romans 8:35, 37-39 NLT)

I found this saying and really liked it:  “God loves you just as you are, but He also loves you enough to not let you stay how you are. He wants to see you grow and change for the better. He sent Jesus to die for your sins so this would be possible.”  (Author Unknown)

Here’s more of the song:                                                                                                                         “When I feel like there’s so much noise; Livin’ rent free in my head.  Heaven finds me in a still small voice; And it sounds like grace instead.  You remind me who I am; When I look in the mirror and I’m not so sure; Lord, I don’t wanna listen to the lies anymore.”                                                   “I know who I am ’cause I know who You are; And I hold Your truth inside of my heart; I know the lies are always gonna try and find me; But I’ve never been so sure.”

As we study and learn more about our Lord Jesus and attempt to emulate Him and His qualities in our lives, we can more easily tune out those lies the enemy attempts to whisper in our ears and the self-doubt he attempts to put in our hearts and minds.  So look in the mirror, tune out those lies and recognize that you are a child of God and your worth to Him is priceless.  And that’s The Truth!
